Dreaming Of A White Christmas?

I am sure the weather weenies are abuzz already over the 12Z running of the GFS (hot off the presses), which shows a colder scenario for Alabama Christmas morning and some potential for accumulating snow over the northern counties of the state. We note that the moisture is not overwhelming, and the dynamic fields are not especially impressive. But, the trend toward some snow is duly noted here.

I will have the full discussion (with the 12Z ECMWF info by then) a little later today… along with a fresh Weather Xtreme video. But remember, we have very little skill in forecasting a snow event three days in advance here in Alabama… we all know it is hard enough 24 hours in advance. Don’t get too excited about waking up to snow on the ground Christmas morning just yet. Remember, climatology is working against us (accumulating snows are very rare here this early in the season), and one model run doesn’t make a forecast. The 18Z or 00Z GFS will probably pop your bubble.

But, it sure will make for some fun days in the weather office. The “little boy” in all of us loves just the chance of having a snow ball fight in the front yard after you open the presents. Again, stick around for the afternoon discussion and Weather Xtreme video a little later today…
