Catching Up…

| January 9, 2011 @ 10:16 pm | 54 Replies

Snow and sleet continues over about the northern half of Alabama tonight. Most across the area are impassable and travel is strongly discouraged.

Snow is heavy over Northwest Alabama now, including parts of Marion and Winston Counties. Streets in downtown Florence are reportedly impassable with 1 inches of snow on the ground. 3 inches around Red Bay and Phil Campbell in Franklin County.

Precipitation has become heavier through Tuscaloosa, Hale, Perry and Dallas Counties. It will move northeast into Jefferson, Shelby, Bibb and Chilton Counties in the next 45 minutes.

That precipitation is just ahead of the dry slot that is rotating up through Southwest Alabama right now. The precipitation will effectively end for the time being when that dry slot arrives. The upper level disturbance over Arkansas and Louisiana is weakening. As it does, the low over the Gulf will continue to weaken.

Some light precipitation will continue through the morning hours and we could see a few snow showers into Tuesday. Highs on Monday will only make it to near freezing. Tuesday’s high will make it into the upper 30s. Colder air will arrive late on Tuesday and highs Wednesday and Thursday may not make it above freezing.
