Alabama Weather Update at 10:50 pm

The snow continues late tonight as Alabama experiences a bona fide winter storm! This includes some thundersnow and most people around here have not seen that since the “Blizzard of ’93. Thundersnow, of course, is thunder and lightning during snow, usually a burst of heavier snow.

Late tonight radar (in the winter mosaic) indicated snow still in progress from about Chilton and Perry County northward to the Tennessee. Some of the heavier snow had shifted into Northeast Alabama but steady snow was still the story over a wide area.

A Winter Storm Warning continues the remainder of tonight and all day Monday for a large part of North Alabama. To the south, it is a Ice Storm Warning for numerous Central Alabama counties and even some in the south. So far, however, the freezing rain has not been as much of an issue as earlier expected.

Streets and highways continue extremely hazardous late tonight in many counties. Many are nearly impassable and some are closed. Numerous accidents occurred in West Alabama this afternoon, especially around Tuscaloosa and this evening there was a rash of accidents in the Birmingham Metro area.

At one time, the St. Clair County EMA was asking for help from owners of 4-wheel drives to help stranded motorists.

We will know much more tomorrow about the amount of snow but there has been some healthy amounts already reported tonight. A sampling so far:

2 inches in 30 minutes at Hayden in Blount County
2 inches at Cordova, earlier report, probably more by now
6 inches at Hamilton
6 inches in part of Etowah County
2 inches in Jasper and Oxford (probably more by now)

SOME LATE SPOT REPORTS
…Muscle Shoals, 28, snow, visibility 1/2 mile
…Huntsville, 27, snow, visibility 1/2 mile
…Haleyville, 25, snow, visibility 1/2 mile
…Tuscaloosa, 32 light snow
…Birmingham, 29, flurries
…Shelby County Airport, 30, a wintry mix
