At the BHM airport, there was officially 1″ of snow on the ground this morning at 7 am.  However, a whole lot more precipitation fell.

1.  Between 3 pm and 8 pm yesterday, 0.21″ of sleet and freezing rain.

2.  Precip changed over to snow around 800 pm.

3.  It changed back to freezing rain and sleet at 1230 am this morning, and another 0.19″ of sleet and freezing rain fell.

So, the ground is like an ice cream sandwich in the BHM metro.  Some sleet and ice on the bottom, a layer of 1-2″ of snow in the middle, then another layer of ice on top of it.

Huntsville and the entire TN Valley got the heaviest snow, and for a period of time, conditions were similar to the blizzard.  Check out this observation from the HSV airport:

KHSV 100553Z 06010G18KT 1/2SM R18R/1600V4500FT TSSN FZFG OVC002CB M03/M03 A3012  RMK AO2 PK WND 06026/0541 TSB44 SLP206 OCNL LTGIC NE TS NE MOV NE SNINCR 4/7 4/007 P0022 60047 T10281033 10006 21028 400061083=

The TSSN means thundersnow, PK WND 06026/0541 means the peak wind gust was from the NE at 26 kt (30 mph), OCNL LTGIC means occasional in-cloud lightning, and SNINCR 4/7 means a snow rate of 4″ per hour, and 7″ on the ground.  Wow.
