Some Light Rain/Snow Tonight

NO DULL MOMENTS AROUND HERE: Interesting times in the weather office with wave after wave rolling through Alabama. And, with plenty of cold around, each wave seems to flirt with more winter weather mischief.
Clouds will increase today, and some light rain will likely move into West Alabama by mid to late afternoon. Then, tonight, as the cold air drops south, the light rain should change to light snow before ending. The one thing that is very clear is that precipitation amounts with this system look to be very light, so this is not a major event for Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for details, but the RPM suggests there could be a dusting as far south as I-20, with some potential for light accumulation over extreme North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley (1/2 inch… maybe 1 inch in spots).
The best snows will be well to the north, mainly north of I-40. Winter weather advisories cover much of Tennessee, and parts of Kentucky are under a winter storm warning.
The main window for light rain and light snow will come from about 4:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. We note the NAM is printing only 0.02″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is at 0.01″. Bottom line is that you don’t need to get too excited about tonight’s weather… save that milk and bread run for later.
TOMORROW: The sky becomes sunny tomorrow… but the weather will be sharply colder. The high will be close to 40 with a good northwest breeze, making it feel colder.
OUR WEEKEND: Saturday morning will be the coldest… with lows generally in the low 20s. The colder spots will likely reach the teens. Then, look for a good supply of sunshine Saturday and Sunday with a high in the upper 40s Saturday, followed by low 50s Sunday.
MONDAY: Here comes the next wave, and again we will flirt with some wintry precipitation. See the Weather Xtreme video, and for now we are going to mention all rain on Monday with the various models now in pretty good agreement. The rain ends Monday night.
REST OF THE WEEK: Instead of a double barrel system that would keep rain going into Tuesday, now there is good agreement that Tuesday will be dry. The dry weather lasts on Wednesday, then our next Gulf wave shows up Thursday, but the best chance of rain with that feature will be over the southern half of the state. Then, on Friday, another shot of cold air blows in here with a phased upper trough over the eastern U.S. becoming established again.
VOODOO COUNTRY: The operational runs of the GFS still look cold into early February. In fact, the 06Z GFS shows a classic North Alabama snow on February 3. Nothing but hocus pocus now… see the Weather Xtreme video for the details.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
