Messy Weather Ahead

Here is a late afternoon look at the unfolding situation for the Deep South… be sure and watch the Weather Xtreme video for the details…

ADVISORIES: The NWS in Jackson has issued a winter storm watch for much of Central and South Mississippi, mainly for freezing rain and sleet. Some snow is possible along the U.S. 82 corridor tomorrow night in Mississippi.

The NWS in Mobile has issued a winter weather advisory for tonight and tomorrow, again for freezing rain and sleet. This is for counties in their CWA in South-Central and Southwest Alabama, including the city of Mobile.

SNOW: Below is the 72 hour snow accumulation output from the RPM…

Clearly, the biggest snow with this event will be well to the west of Alabama. We expect a change to light snow as the event ends late Friday night into Saturday morning, but no major accumulation is expected.

FREEZING RAIN/ICE: This is the greatest concern. Below is the RPM output, valid at at 8:00 Friday…

The model suggests a significant amount of freezing rain over Northwest Alabama, especially in areas north and west of Birmingham… and to the west over Mississippi. There could be enough ice accumulation in these areas for very icy bridges, and also scattered power outages due to the weight of ice on trees and power lines.

As we stated in the afternoon discussion, it looks like the greatest risk of freezing rain in Alabama Friday morning will be west of a line from Livingston to Eutaw to Tuscaloosa to Jasper to Cullman to Huntsville. But, this is a very difficult call this early in the game, and that could change. For most of Alabama after mid-morning Friday, it will just be a cold, miserable rainy day.

Stay tuned for updates…
