West Alabama Nearing 80 Degrees

WARM FEBRUARY: Sure looks like Tuscaloosa will set a new record high today… at 1:00 they were already at 76; the record high today for Tuscaloosa is 77 set in 1956, the year of my birth. Somebody on the western wide of the state might even touch 80 degrees this afternoon… this is about as warm as it ever gets in late February in Alabama. The sky is sunny over the central counties… clouds are hanging tough over Northeast Alabama where temperatures are still in the 60s.
OUR WEEKEND: We are going to forecast highs in the mid 70s both tomorrow and Sunday, and like today, some West Alabama communities could very well hit the big 80 degree mark. Record highs are certainly possible both days with a mix of sun and clouds. Another great spring preview.
NEXT WEEK: A weakening cold front will bring some risk of scattered showers late Monday or Monday night, but unfortunately it still doesn’t look like the rain will be especially widespread or beneficial. Model guidance is trending colder for Tuesday, and I think that is correct considering the strength of the cold airmass that is creeping over the Canadian border. The high Tuesday will drop to near 50 degrees, and by early Wednesday many places will start the day right at the freezing mark. But, we warm quickly with highs back in the 60s Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.
Another front will bring some risk of showers on Friday 2/25, or the following day (Saturday 2/26). Again, the better dynamics will pass north of the state so more than likely the rain won’t be especially heavy.
LONG RANGE: The 12Z GFS shows a severe weather setup around March 5, but that is all voodoo. We sure could use a good rain event, however… as it looks like temperatures will stay above average and rain below average into early March. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
