ONE MORE NICE DAY: Alabama will stay dry today with a partly sunny sky and a high in the low to mid 70s this afternoon. But, clouds will thicken tonight, and some big changes are ahead as we near the weekend.

TOMORROW/SATURDAY: Showers will develop across the state tomorrow as moisture returns. And, it sure looks like some of that colder air way up north over New England will drain down the eastern slopes of the Appalachian Mountains, setting up a CAD effect for Alabama with cool air moving in from the east. Some communities along the Georgia border could stay in the 50s all day, other places will see a high in the 60s.

Rain becomes more widespread and heavy at times Saturday as an upper trough approaches. There is a sliver of instability Saturday evening, but severe weather parameters are very unimpressive and it looks like a mostly heavy rain event for our state. I know there are lots of outdoor events going on, but it sure doesn’t look good with rain likely much of the day along with some thunder and lightning. The guys at NCEP still suggest two inches of rain are likely for North Alabama… certainly not convenient coming on a weekend, but it is something we do need. Birmingham’s rain deficiency for the year is up to 3.06″, while Tuscaloosa is 5.43″ below average for 2011.

SUNDAY: The rain should end late Saturday night, or during the pre-dawn hours Sunday. We will forecast gradual clearing Sunday afternoon with cooler temperatures; the high will be only in the mid 50s at most places Sunday. Clouds could hang tough most of the day north of Birmingham.

NEXT WEEK: Monday morning will be cold, with a freeze possible and frost likely. Lows will be in the 30-37 degree range with a clear sky and calm wind. Then, we warm into the low 60s Monday afternoon with sunshine in full supply. Tuesday will be dry, but a cold front will bring another round of showers and thunderstorms at mid-week; the 06Z GFS suggests the main event will be Wednesday night. See the Weather Xtreme video for details… cooler and drier air will return for Thursday and Friday.

LONG RANGE: Still no sign of any really seriously cold air blasts into Alabama through mid-month with the mean upper trough over the western states. Again take a look at the Weather Xtreme video for more on long range ideas.
