A List of Big Alabama Rain Amounts

| March 9, 2011 @ 11:05 am | 6 Replies

It has been a long time since we have seen rain totals this large over such a wide area of Alabama. The whole state got wet (very wet) overnight and this morning, Unfortunately, a lot of that heavy rain was still in progress during (Morning Drive) (Morning Rush Hour) Because of that numerous accidents occurred. At the end of this long rain list is a few notes about the impact.

The rain has tapered off over the NW part of the state. That line of intense storms had moved over into East Alabama by 8:30 am. As the cold front enters NW Alabama, it will trigger some more showers and storms but not to match what we have already experienced,

Here we go with totals. Some of these are 24 hour amounts, some overnight. We often get more than one report from some areas:

4.00 Coker, Tuscaloosa County
4.75 nine miles north of Fayette
2.25 Concord/Hueytown
2.76 Center Point
5.86 Union Chapel, Walker County between Jasper and Cordova

2.20 McDonald’s Chapel

THE BAD NEWS
* 2 feet of water across Highway 96, Lamar County, west of Millport
* Garden City observer reports flooding in parts od Hanceville worst he has seen in 16 years
* Multiple roadways flooded in Shelby County
* Greensboro, Hale County, water over one foot deep on Hale County Roads 4,19 and Bates- Newall Road causing multiple traffic accidents
* Marion, Perry County, several streets closed and some culverts washed out
* Several streets flooded in Fayette
* Walker County, at least 6 or 7 streets closed due to flooding.

Remember, there has probably been enough drainage that a lot of these streets may be OK now. The above list is only a small sample of the flood problems earlier today.
