THIS AFTERNOON: As expected, temperature guidance from MOS products were way too warm this afternoon. Temperatures are only in the low to mid 40s around here… a good 20 degrees below average for mid-March, thanks to a deep, cold upper trough passing overhead. We had a few showers over the northern third of the state this morning, but those are long gone.

TONIGHT: As subsidence kicks in following the departing trough, the sky should clear tonight, and if that does indeed happen we will make a run for the freezing mark early tomorrow. The GFS is printing 31 for Birmingham… but it will all depend on the clouds. If the clouds hang around through sunrise tomorrow, then our low will be in the mid to upper 30s. If the sky goes clear, we will drop into the 27-34 degree range.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: A very nice warm-up begins tomorrow afternoon… with a sunny sky we should reach the upper 50s. Then, a delightful weekend is ahead, with ample sunshine and a high around 70 both Saturday and Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: We will still need to mention some risk of showers late Monday through Tuesday of next week, but neither the GFS or the ECMWF are very aggressive with rain amounts. In fact, the GFS is pretty dry on these days. Then, we should be dry and mild Tuesday through Thursday with highs in the low to mid 70s. A cold front will bring a chance of showers at the end of the week on Friday, but for now it doesn’t look like an especially big rain event. See the Weather Xtreme video for a day by day breakdown.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
