THIS AFTERNOON: Absolutely delightful. A sunny sky, low humidity, and temperatures mostly in the 60s across this part of Alabama. The weather is considerably colder to the north over Tennessee, where clouds are hanging tough… Portland, Tennessee is reporting only 39 degrees at 3:00 with a chilly north wind. Nashville is at 47.

COLD NIGHT: Tomorrow morning will be pretty chilly, with most places dropping into the 35-39 degree range. A touch of light frost is possible in scattered spots, and some of the colder valleys might even touch the freezing mark briefly. Then, we warm up nicely tomorrow with a high in the upper 60s along with a good supply of sunshine.

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT: Parameters continue to look more impressive for severe weather across Alabama Saturday afternoon into Saturday night with very good instability, strong wind fields, and a degree of helicity. While a shower is possible Saturday morning, it looks like the prime severe weather threat will come from 2:00 p.m. through the late night hours. Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see that the forecast STP values from the NAM (significant tornado parameter) are over 7 units, which is extremely significant. SPC maintains the standard slight risk of severe weather for the northern half of Alabama; don’t be surprised if that is upgraded to a moderate risk at some point. If the sun peeks out, we might be close to 80 in spots Saturday afternoon, adding to the instability.

SUNDAY: We will keep the chance of showers going on Sunday, but drier air begins to nose into extreme North Alabama during the day. Bottom line is that it won’t rain all day, and it could very well be that the best chance of showers will come during the morning hours. The high Sunday will be in the low to mid 70s.

NEXT WEEK: Global models continue the dry trend for Monday… so we will be much more optimistic in the forecast and forecast a clearing sky with sunshine by Monday afternoon. Tuesday looks dry and mild, but showers and storms return at mid-week Wednesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for more on long range ideas.
