Warm and windy are the weather words for today while stormy comes to mind for the word for Monday. As the surface high moves off to the east of Alabama, surface moisture will increase rapidly along with the tightening of the pressure gradient. With strong southerly wind, wind advisories are in effect for much of the eastern half of the country including Central Alabama. High temperatures across the area will once again surge toward the 80-degree mark.

Warmth and wind stay with us on Monday as the moisture continues to increase with the surface high to our east and the low pressure storm system to our northwest. Dew points are expected to reach into the 60s during the afternoon Monday helping to set the stage for another round of severe weather for the Southeast US. I think the best timing will be from Monday afternoon through early Tuesday morning. While the surface low is fairly far north, the strong contrast across the front along with the warm air advection and surface moisture increase we should see all forms of severe weather as possible. Forecast soundings suggest a cap in place, however, I think the cap appears to be weak enough that it will be easily eroded with the strong dynamics of the upper trough.

As with many of these systems, it should move fairly quickly through Central Alabama with much of the severe weather out of the area by midnight or very early Tuesday morning. Tuesday should be a nice day with the rain and storms gone but some cooler air coming into the region. By Wednesday morning we could once again see some of the colder spots dipping back into the 30s for lows.

Rainfall with this system should average about an inch for many locales. Naturally, with the nature of the thunderstorms, some places could see around an inch and a half. And it would not be a bad idea to review your storm safety rules once again to be as prepared as you can be for nature may throw at us. By the way, since I am in Chicago at this writing, I’m under a slight risk for severe storms tonight, so I will be keeping my eyes – and my camera – open tonight.

By the end of the week, warmth returns as the upper atmospheric flow turns southwesterly. This also opens the door for scattered showers each day through the weekend. But the warm temperatures will make it very nice for those that might be attending the Honda Indy Grand Prix at Barber Motorsports Park at Leeds.

Further afield, the flow stays fairly active with new systems every few days. Timing always an issue that far out, but it looks like some wet weather around the 11th and again around the 15th-16th.
