An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

Temperatures will drop pretty quickly tonight… and most communities will go down in the 20s again with no real change in the airmass. Then, we warm up into the mid to upper 50s tomorrow as winds veer to the south. A weak impulse will bring an outside risk of a shower, or a little light rain, on Wednesday, but the next good chance of rain comes on Thursday with a pretty decent short wave upper trough. There might be a little thunder in spots, and we expect around one-half inch of rain Thursday. Then, Friday, we will be dry as the state is in-between waves.

WEEKEND PEEK: A strong system will impact Alabama over the weekend; at this point it looks like the best chance of showers and storms will come from around 5:00 p.m. Saturday through 6:00 a.m. Sunday. The latest run of the GFS (12Z) has the surface low pretty far to the north, and considering the fast movement of the system it now looks more like rain totals with this will be somewhere between one-half and one inch. SPC has about the southern half of Alabama in a severe weather risk on Saturday, but instability values for now look marginal for a major severe weather problem. Of course, we are early in the week and that might change. We really do need to focus on one wave at a time; once we get the Thursday system out of here will have a much better idea of how the weekend will play out.

CHRISTMAS: No change in our thinking for early next week; the weather looks cool and dry for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, with temperatures near average values for late December. That would mean highs in the 50s, lows in the 30s.

VOODOO COUNTRY: A strong short wave shows up with a nice rain event around December 28-29, and the active parade of waves should continue into early January. The flow will more zonal, meaning the really cold air will stay up north over the big snow and ice pack. IF the GFS is correct.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We will record a few show tonight… and it should be available around 10:00.

WEATHER PARTY: Get all the latest weather news over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com. Be sure and register while you are there; you can submit stories and vote on them to determine what is published on the front page. This is a great way to find the latest weather-related news stories.

Thanks for everyone at Glen Iris Baptist Church for their kindness today… I was there to appear on their radio station (WGIB, 91.9) for a midday talk show. Lots of good calls. Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow….
