Rain Progress–9:40 Report

| December 20, 2007 @ 9:27 am | Reply

Seems like it is raining over every square inch of Mississippi.

And, that is good news for Alabama.

Even more important than football.

At 9:40 am, the rain was extensive across Mississippi. This included heavy rain over a good part of Central and Southwest Mississippi and light to moderate over the north. Some of the rain was already spreading into the western row of Alabama counties adjacent to the Mississippi border.

Rain will become widespread for us as the day goes on and we should get some good amounts.

SEVERE WEATHER RISK
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC for short) has a slight risk for today and tonight for:
* All of Louisiana
* Extreme South Mississippi
* SW Corner of Alabama including Mobile, Bay Minette, Gulf Shores

TORNADO WATCH
In effect until 4 o’clock this afternoon for about the south half of Louisiana and a small part of South Mississippi. NWS has issued a number of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings this morning in Louisiana and Central and South Mississippi

SPOT REPORTS
Tupelo…heavy rain, visibility 3/4 mile (Extreme NE Mississippi)
Jackson…steady moderate rain, visibility one mile.

RAIN SHORTAGE
Be sure and scroll down to see the post by Brian Peters. He covers the rain deficit for Alabama very well. Huntsville needs 10 inches of rain in the next 10 days to keep 2007 from being the driest year on record.

AN AMAZING RAIN DEFICIT
This one catches my attention more than any. At Huntsville, the rain deficit for the last three years (since January 1, 2005) has reached an amazing 60.26 inches. That is a year’s supply + about 10 inches that they have missed out on.

I will repeat that deficit so you will not think it is a TYPO:

60.26 inches! (five feet of missing rain)

We will have a bunch of additional blog updates today and tonight–sort of a play-by progress on the welcome rain.
