Gravity wave warning

J.B. has kidded me before about issuing one of these…so here it is.

Reports of wind damage widespread with this wave to our northwest. See below. The wave is moving into BHM from the NW about 50 mph. The fact that it has sped up some may actually reduce the wind threat somewhat, but I wouldn’t take that into to much account.

Radar shows winds of 36-50 knots (42-58 mph) around 2,500 feet altitude…and sometimes gravity wave winds are maximized near the ground. So, winds of 50 mph, along with wind damage, downed trees, etc., are still possible in Birmingham in the next hour. The wind will blow out of the SE, into the wave, much like the water moves off the beach and out to sea into a wave as it approaches.
