Get Ready For Colder…

| December 30, 2007 @ 5:48 am | 4 Replies

Some dramatically colder and potentially dangerous Arctic air is heading for Alabama for later this week.

While we will not experience any zero degree readings, or anything like that, the airmass we will get starting Tuesday is going to be extremely cold and potentially damaging or deadly.

An Arctic front will arrive early Tuesday, followed by strong northwesterly winds and much colder temperatures.

Readings on Tuesday will only manage to make the lower to middle 40s before the onrushing cold air overwhelms the warming of the day and temperatures fall back through the 30s during the afternoon. Lows Tuesday night will fall into the teens and lower 20s at most locations in northern and Central Alabama. Some lower teens will be observed in the colder locations.

Highs on Wednesday will struggle to make it above freezing.

With a strong northwest wind on Tuesday and a biting north wind on Wednesday, wind chill values will likely stay below freezing both days.

Precautions should be taken to protect property, pets and lives during this cold snap. Protect tender vegetation. Make sure pets have adequate shelter and unfrozen water. Check on proper heating in homes and buildings to ensure exposed pipes do not freeze. Monitor neighbors, friends and family members to ensure they have adequate heat and are not caught unawares by the situation. Check your automobiles for antifreeze protection and carry some blankets in your vehicle. Bundle up if you will be outdoors.
