Wrap around moisture from the surface low over the Ohio River Valley extends all the way into the Lower Mississippi River Valley this morning keeping much of the Southeast US under a deck of clouds. While we will see a few peeks at the sun today, I expect it to remain mostly cloudy and unseasonably cool with highs again today remaining mainly in the 60s.

The upper air pattern will be slow to change over the next week with the deep trough and closed low over the Southeast US while another deep closed low settles into the Southwest US. Monday will probably be our best shot at some rain but it will come in the form of isolated to scattered showers so many of us will stay dry.

As the deep trough and closed low final inch a bit further east, we will come under the influence of a ridge between the two troughs. This should keep us dry through the latter part of the upcoming week. The deep trough and closed low over the Southwest US will finally come out into the Central US on Friday which will dampen the ridge and bring some small chance of rain to Central Alabama for the weekend. But this is edging into voodoo country, so even a small change at mid-week could change the forecast for next weekend substantially.

Looks like another shot at some rain around May 26th as a short wave trough moves across the Central US. By May 30th the GFS paints an interesting pattern with a very strong ridge over the eastern half of the US with an upper low cut off under the ridge. This would present an interesting challenge for the forecast, but it is also well into voodoo country and is likely to change before we get to it!

I had a fabulous time at the Buck Creek Festival yesterday. Great bands, too much great food to sample, and lots of people to see and talk with. Already looking forward to the festival for May 2012! I hope that you have a wonderful day. James Spann will be back tomorrow morning with the next edition of the Weather Xtreme Video. Godspeed.
