An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

HEADED FOR THE 80s: After a series of amazingly cool days for May, a noticeable warm-up begins today as most places hit the 80 degree mark. Tomorrow, as an upper ridge amplifies, we hit the upper 80s, and highs over the weekend will remain in the 87-90 degree range. Don’t look for any rain through Sunday, although humidity levels will rise over the weekend giving the air a summer feel.

While we enjoy the warm, dry weather, severe storms could very well be an issue for the Southern Plains each day through Saturday, but none of that will impact Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: While I guess you might mention some risk of isolated afternoon showers Monday through Wednesday, the weather looks generally dry and very warm for the first half of the week with highs in the upper 80s.

Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will note the 00Z GFS does show a strong short wave impacting Alabama one week from today, with a favorable setup for strong to severe thunderstorms on Thursday May 26. Still way to early to be specific, but by Monday of next week we can give you details on the threat. Needless to say, there are many nervous people in our after the generational tornado outbreak of April 27, and we will have to handle the situation carefully as it gets closer.

If we do have a severe weather threat late next week more than likely it will be the last one of the 2011 spring tornado season as the strongest winds aloft shift north as June arrives, and we go into a summer pattern. See the video for long range thoughts.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
