Weather Calmer – Colder Coming

The weather is certainly much calmer today and yesterday was a beautiful day with some spectacular cirrus that just painted the sky with great wisps like a feather brush. Be sure to scroll down a bit to see the aerial survey I did of the Caledonia damage and Lamar County damage because I got a great shot of cirrus with a blazing sun dog.

The next five days look reasonably dry with one some clouds to deal with primarily. The GFS is still forecasting a low in the northwest Gulf around Wednesday. But between now and then we’ll be dealing with several short waves that will flow quickly by producing clouds and little else as the atmosphere remains fairly dry.

Temperatures will be mild today as we nudge into the lower 60s with a good deal of sunshine. But as a long wave trough gradually develops across the central section of the country, the trend will be toward colder temperatures.

Be Wednesday the surface low forms in the Northwest Gulf and moves across the northern Gulf before shooting up the East Coast. Currently the GFS is maintaining a relatively small amount of precipitation across the northern half of Alabama, but this will be one of those systems that we’ll need to watch. Should the low be slightly stronger and moisture come further north, we could find ourselves in a mess with cold air lurking just north of Alabama. I think this surface low will produce some serious weather problems for the East Coast on Thursday.

We will end the week cold as the 540 thickness contour plunges to the Gulf Coast. And we will stay cold for several days until a gradual shift in the pattern allows a return to more seasonal values by Sunday.

Peeking into voodoo country, it would appear the vigorous pattern sticks with us along with some good shots at rain – and that will be welcome.

Thanks for stopping by the Blog. We appreciate it. I hope that you have a great weekend – I’m planning on putting my feet up and doing as little as I can get away with after the busy last couple of days. God bless.
