STRONG STORMS: SPC maintains a severe thunderstorm watch for the northern half of Alabama through 8:00. As I write this around 3:15, some of the stronger storms are over Walker, Fayette, Pickens, and North Tuscaloosa Counties of West Alabama. Like yesterday, the stronger storms are capable of producing lots of lightning, localized areas of damaging straight line winds, and small hail. The intensity of the storms will begin to go downhill once the sun goes down later this evening.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: Looks like tomorrow will be another day with a pretty decent coverage of showers and thunderstorms for summer, with a high in the upper 80s. The showers and storms could thin out slightly on Friday, but a very moist airmass remains in place, and a shower or thunderstorm will be possible at just about any time with a mix of sun and clouds. The high Friday will be close to 90.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: The 12Z run of the GFS shows the ridge getting a little stronger, but we will continue to mention scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. There will be intervals of sunshine both days, with a high near or perhaps just over 90 degrees.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The ridge gets stronger next week, meaning heat levels will creep upward, with showers and storms becoming fewer in number. We rise into the mid 90s by Tuesday and Wednesday. Then, the GFS is advertising fairly routine mid-summer weather as we head into July and the Independence Day holiday. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.
