It’s officially summer, and the forecast has definitely gone into summer mode! With an overall pattern that is changing little, look for isolated to scattered showers each day across Central Alabama with perhaps some slight increase in the shower coverage during the latter half of the upcoming week.

The central figure in our weather pattern is a large upper ridge that is centered this morning off to the west over Texas and northern Mexico. That ridge is forecast to get a bit stronger and edge closer to Alabama. As it exerts a bit more influence on us, we should see the shower coverage decrease a bit with primarily isolated showers. Unfortunately, the heat will also crank up some, too, bringing highs into the upper 90s with high indices climbing into the 100 to 105 range.

A slight weakness in the upper air pattern develops as we head into the latter part of the week, so I would expect to see an increase in the coverage of showers on Thursday and Friday and perhaps into the weekend. Rainfall amounts for those places getting rain could reach into the 1 inch area, but because of the character of showers, rainfall is not going to be widespread and uniform. Some places will get an inch while others – and some not too far away – could see next to nothing.

Nothing exciting in the tropics to watch just yet, but watch the video for an interesting look to the forecast as we head into July. SPC continues to outlook an area to our north and northwest for a slight risk of severe thunderstorms, generally along and on the north side of the large upper ridge.

Don’t forget to listen to our weekly netcast anytime on the web or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
