LONG WEEKEND: Time to bring on the long Fourth of July holiday weekend. It marks the middle of summer for most, and it will sure feel that way. The weather won’t change much today and tomorrow; lots of sun and a high up in the mid 90s. The humidity will remain fairly low today, but will rise slowly over the weekend bringing back the “muggy” factor to our weather.

We will introduce the risk of “widely scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms” Sunday and Monday, but they shouldn’t interfere with too many cookouts, and most of the storms where they develop will be over by fireworks time Monday night. Highs hold in the mid 90s…. maybe a few upper 90s over West Alabama closer to the center of the heat bubble, and where soil moisture levels are lower.

NEXT WEEK: The heat ridge slowly weakens, so we expect a slow increase in the number of scattered showers and storms over the latter half of next week; highs will be mostly in the low to mid 90s with a mix of sun and clouds each day. Hot, hazy, humid… you know the routine.

TROPICS: Arlene is official dissipated over Mexico, and the rest of the Atlantic basin is very quiet this morning. Tropical storm formation is not expected over the weekend.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Looking nice for the long weekend. Partly to mostly sunny days, fair nights, and a few widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. The high will be close to 90 on the immediate coast, with mid 90s inland. Sea water temperatures remain in the mid to upper 80s near the Alabama and Northwest Florida coast.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
