SMOTHERED BY HIGH HUMIDITY: The dewpoint at 5:00 this morning in Birmingham is 75 degrees… along with a temperature of 78 that makes the humidity at 90 percent, and you will sure feel it when you walk out the door. And, like recent mornings, in this ocean of humidity, we have a few showers on radar; mostly in Bibb, Hale, Perry, and Marengo Counties just before dawn.

Today will be pretty similar to yesterday, hot, very humid, and the chance of scattered showers and strong thunderstorms. Most places will see a high in the mid 90s, which is certainly no big deal for July in Alabama. But, those high dewpoints will make the heat pretty oppressive.

REST OF THE WEEK: Slowly, heights fall, meaning the air will be a little more unstable, heat levels drop a bit, and coverage of scattered showers and storms increase. By the time we get to Thursday and Friday, the high should be closer to 90 with any one spot having a 50/50 chance of getting wet a time or two.

Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the QPF chart from NCEP suggests much of North/Central Alabama will see 1-2 inches of rain, with heavier totals over Southwest Alabama. Of course, on a daily basis the rain distribution will be uneven, but if you smooth out everything over a 5 day period, some decent rain amounts certainly look likely.

THE WEEKEND: The usual summer forecast. Mixed sun and clouds, highs in the low 90s, and the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, mostly likely during the afternoon and evening hours. This kind of weather pattern continues into early next week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: We project about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend with the daily risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs along the immediate coast will be close to 90 degrees, and the sea water temperatures continue to run in the upper 80s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical wave is moving into Central America this morning, but won’t have a chance to develop due to the proximity to land. Another wave is nearing the Windward Islands, but hostile upper winds will prevent this from getting organized in the short term. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
