More Rain By Sunday

The Friday afternoon edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes:

The weather is improving nicely across Alabama this afternoon… just a few lingering showers are dotting the radar screen as drier air slips into the state from the west. The weather will looks fairly decent tomorrow; after morning clouds some good intervals of sunshine during the day and only a few isolated showers. Temperatures should touch 70 degrees in many areas if enough sunshine breaks through.

MORE RAIN SUNDAY: Rain will move back into the state with the next wave from the FCSM early Sunday; looks like rain will fall much of the day Sunday along with a few thunderstorms. No severe weather is expected, and rainfall amounts of about one inch are likely. Should we wind up with well over one inch, there will be some concern over flash flooding.

COLDER NEXT WEEK: The rain moves out Sunday night, and much cooler air moves back in here next week. We might have a hard time getting out of the 40s on Monday with clouds lingering much of the day. And, the 12Z GFS is showing a high of only 48 for Tuesday as the upper trough deepens over the east (it will be only temporary, however). I would not be shocked if a few snow flurries showed up over far North Alabama Tuesday morning, and by Wednesday morning when the sky clears we should see lows in the mid 20s as far south as Birmingham. Temperatures will moderate by Thursday and Friday, however. At this point most of the week looks dry.

LONG RANGE: At the end of next week a cold western U.S. upper trough becomes the big story, and that moves only slowly to the east. There will be quite a battleground between the cold air over the west and the warmer air over the Southeast U.S. by then; there is still some concern over an extended period of rain across the Deep South in the January 14-17 time frame.

RIVER FLOODING: A flood warning has been posted for the upper Tombigbee River including the Bevill Lock and Dam in Pickens County; see the details here.

MISSISSIPPI/LOUISIANA DAMAGE: Get the latest updates on tornado damage in these two states over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com.

Brian Peters will have the Weather Xtreme videos here on the blog over the weekend… my next video will come up Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. Have a wonderful weekend!
