Strong Winds Moving Through Jefferson County

| September 5, 2011 @ 2:39 pm | 4 Replies

Strong winds are moving into Downtown Birmingham now. The thunderstorms that increased in intensity quickly over western Jefferson County have bowed out and Doppler radar shows base velocities of 45 knots only 1,200 feet off the ground.

Damaging winds are possible with this bow as it moves across Jefferson County from Gardendale to Hoover and northeastward through Downtown, Tarrant, Irondale, Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills and up toward Roebuck and Trussville.

You could even see a small spin up tornado along the line.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect.

LATE REPORT AT 2:43:
BHM Tower reporting 30 knot wind gust (36 mph).
