Major flooding – stay home

SCROLL DOWN TO SEE FLOODING PICTURES IN JAMES’ POST BELOW

We had something similar to the system featured in the movie “The Perfect Storm” today, where a tropical cyclone (TD Lee) interacted with an upper-level disturbance and cold front.  This produced high winds, wind damage, and enormous amounts of rain over Alabama.  The center of the circulation is now near Clanton.

Even though the heaviest rain is finally moving north, streets will continue to flood in the BHM area, and all over central and north AL, this evening.  DO NOT CROSS A WATER COVERED ROADWAY.  It is not that important.  Find another way home.  It’s too risky.

River flooding is already underway.  Here at Bluff Creek on The Warrior River (Bankhead Lake), the water has risen about 2 feet from the near record low the corps of engineers drew it down to yesterday, and is now over many people’s docks.  It was rising 2″ per hour last time I checked.  We received about 8.60″ of rain here.  Logs are already breaking loose from shallow areas and floating into the channel.
