Well, it’s hard to believe that WeatherFest is here as well as the National Weather Association’s national conference. But they are! After years of planning and thinking and doing, we are on the verge of the biggest weather gathering of meteorological folks ever in Birmingham. Today is WeatherFest at the McWane Science Center, so come on out from 10 am to 2 pm for some great displays and chats with many local weather folks including some legends!

And the weather will be fantastic for the event, too. Great news since some of the events and attractions are outside. Look for a high today around 80 with low humidity as dew points stay in the 40s. Our northwesterly flow will dampen a bit Sunday and Monday which will allow us to warm up with highs climbing into the lower and mid 80s.

But then the changes begin. A short wave coming out of the northern Rockies should deepen substantially on Tuesday digging into the lower Mississippi River Valley by Wednesday. This will bring some of the chilliest air of the Fall so far with some risk that we could see frosty conditions by the end of the week.

While the colder weather is fairly assured, the pressing question is whether or not we will see any rain. There are some model differences on the timing of the frontal passage, and that may play a role. If the front comes through later in the day, then we could see some destabilization of the atmosphere with the help of afternoon heating. This would give much of Central Alabama a shot at some rain and perhaps a thunderstorm. If the front comes through earlier in the day, then any destabilization with the help of afternoon heating would come further east. So for the moment I’ll simply forecast a chance of showers on Tuesday.

The flow goes northerly with a fetch running from Central Canada all the way down to Gulf Coast. This will produce some chilly mornings and cool afternoons through the latter part of the week.

Nothing of much significance going on in the tropics. NHC watching two areas – one way out in the Atlantic and another in the western Caribbean, neither of which is likely to develop in the next 48 hours.

Another big trough to our west promises some warm and wet weather around the 25th but the pattern flattens out as we approach Halloween.

Don’t forget to listen to our weekly netcast anytime on the web or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
