COLD NIGHT AHEAD: With a clear sky and diminishing wind, the stage is set for a freeze for much of North and Central Alabama early tomorrow. We are forecasting an average low of 32, but we all know the colder spots will easily be in the 20s. Many cities have already seen a freeze or two this season, but the one early tomorrow should be pretty widespread.
A warming trend begins tomorrow afternoon with a sunny sky and a high near 60.
WEEKEND WARM-UP: The warming trend continues over the weekend, with mid 60s Saturday and low 70s Sunday. We will enjoy a good supply of sunshine both days, although a few scattered clouds will begin to show up Sunday along with a southerly breeze.
COLD NIGHT FOR FOOTBALL: Round two of the high school playoffs will be rather chilly! A clear sky and a light breeze will mean a quick temperature drop. Kickoff temperatures will range from 45 to 50, and most will be around 38 to 42 by the fourth quarter.
SUNNY SATURDAY: College football games look sunny and mild on Saturday. It will be a chilly morning with lows in the 30s and 40s, but expect lower and middle 60s around Alabama and our neighboring states Saturday afternoon. Auburn heads over to Athens, Georgia to play the eastern Bulldogs for a 2:30 PM kickoff. Temperatures will be in the lower 60s falling into the mid-50s by the fourth quarter. UAB travels to Memphis for a 3:15 PM game, and it will feature mid-60s at kickoff. Alabama travels to Starkville, Mississippi to play the western Bulldogs of Mississippi State at 6:45 PM; this is the only one that will really get chilly… It will start out in the upper 50s and fall to the 40s by the fourth quarter.
NEXT WEEK: Run to run model consistency remains poor on the specifics next week, but we will mention some risk of a shower as early as Monday afternoon, followed by a better chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm in the Tuesday-Wednesday time frame. The 12Z GFS is slower, holding off most of the rain until Wednesday. Then, drier air works into North Alabama Thursday, but not really colder. Some chance the front hangs up over South Alabama as well, which could keep the rain chances going for the southern counties past Wednesday. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
SEAN: The tropical storm in the Atlantic will pass west of Bermuda tonight on the way to the North Atlantic… elsewhere the Atlantic basin is quiet in this last month of the 2011 hurricane season.
STORM ALERT XTREME: Our annual storm spotter training is coming up on Saturday, November 12 at the BJCC, as part of the Alabama International Auto show. We begin at 9:00, and you will be done at 2:00. And, as a “thank you”, you will get free admission into the car show. There is no cost, and no need to register, just show up. Brian Peters will be the trainer, and we ask all existing and potential Skywatchers to attend. See you there!
