Breezy Sunday

A good looking Sunday is in progress across Central Alabama this afternoon.  We used to call it variable cloudiness, that mix of clouds and sun that features some sunny periods, some cloudy periods, and everything in between.  Temperatures are warming toward the upper 60s.  A few spots will make 70F this afternoon, sort of a preview of things to come over the next couple of days.

BREEZY:  Across the middle of the state, winds were averaging 10-18 mph out of the south, with occasional gusts to over 20 mph.  It is downright windy over the Tennessee Valley, where winds were gusting to over 30 mph at times.  The breezy winds are courtesy of a tightening pressure gradient between the subtropical high to our east and low pressure departing from the Great Lakes into Canada.  That gradient will relax tonight, although you will still notice a southerly breeze even overnight.  Lows tonight will only fall into the upper 50s, with readings near 60F in urban areas like Birmingham.  More low clouds could form overnight, and we can’t even rule out a light shower, especially through the predawn hours.

A few showers will show up tomorrow and tomorrow night with rain chances increasing on Tuesday and Tuesday night ahead of developing low pressure that will form to our west and track east northeast. We have our fingers crossed for one half to one inch of rain from this next system, but such things have had a way for going poof before our eyes recently. There could be some thunder Tuesday afternoon and night, and can’t rule out a little stray thunder tomorrow as well, but nothing strong to worry about.

Wednesday will be breezy and colder, with temperatures only rising a couple of degrees from morning lows. We will be back near freezing Thursday and Friday mornings.
