THIS MORNING: One of our coldest ones so far this season. Some 5:00 a.m. temperatures include…

Haleyville 21
Black Creek (just northeast of Gadsden) 22
Valley Head 23
Anniston 24
Center Point 26
Concord 27
Tuscaloosa 27
Birmingham 28

THE DAYS AHEAD: The dry air in place will heat nicely today; we will enjoy blue sky and sunshine throughout the day with a high in the upper 50s. We warm into the low 60s tomorrow, and mid 60s Saturday with a sunny sky on both days. Saturday should be a delightful day to kick off the weekend. Clouds will begin to return Sunday, but our weather stays dry as the new system to the west takes it time. The high holds in the 60s Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: An axis of heavy rain develops from near Memphis down to Shreveport Sunday, and the front will be parallel to the upper air flow, so the eastward progression will be very slow. Rain should move into Northwest Alabama Monday, with the rain becoming widespread statewide by Monday night and Tuesday. While there could be some thunder somewhere, this is not a severe weather setup thankfully. We turn sharply colder as the rain falls Tuesday; the latest GFS shows we will be in the 40s all day with low clouds and occasional rain. Then, a surface low forms on the front east of Alabama Wednesday, meaning lingering clouds here with cold temperatures and a chance of some light morning drizzle or a few snow flurries in spots. We probably won’t make it out of the 40s again on Wednesday. Then, Thursday and Friday will be brighter and warmer.

LONG RANGE: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the North Atlantic Oscillation spikes positive at mid-month, meaning most of the cold air should be over the western half of the nation. It can get cold here with a positive NAO, but it is much harder for it to happen. This could very well mean relatively mild weather for mid to late month. Don’t get your hopes up for a back to back White Christmas.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
