More Rain Ahead; A Few Snow Flakes As Well

| December 6, 2011 @ 3:18 pm

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

RIGHT NOW: Our slow moving front is over East Alabama… east of the front, Auburn is at 66 degrees, but to the west Haleyville is 23 degrees colder at 43. At the moment there isn’t much rain across our state, but rain is increasing over the southern half of Mississippi, and southwest winds aloft will carry that rain up into the northern half of Alabama during the next few hours.

We will forecast periods of rain tonight with low clouds and temperatures settling into the 40s as the front continues the very slow journey to the east.

COLD DAY TOMORROW: Models are in good agreement with a very sharp vorticity maximum moving right over North Alabama tomorrow afternoon. We will maintain the risk of some light rain tomorrow, but the dynamic cooling associated with the vort max will bring the chance of light snow, snow flurries, or a few snow showers to North Alabama tomorrow afternoon into the evening hours. The RPM suggests we might see a few snow flakes as far south as I-20 (Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston), but no need to panic or make the milk and bread run since surface temperatures will be well above freezing and there will be no significant accumulation. I guess if we see a convective type snow shower, it might make the grass white in a few spots, but there will be no travel issues other than just wet roadways.

THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY: The sky will clear Thursday with sunshine returning; the high will be in the low 50s as cool air remains in place. The weather stays cool and dry Friday through the weekend, with highs in the 50-55 degree range, and lows between 25 and 32.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS hints our next rain event comes around the middle of next week… see the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
