Front About Halfway Through Alabama
Around 10 am this morning, the cold front was located on a line running from about Chattanooga to Birmingham to Meridian and was moving quickly eastward. I anticipate that the front should be out of the state with the exception of the extreme southeast corner around 3 pm this afternoon. Fortunately, the sky is clearing rapidly right behind a very weak line of showers. Showers were located near Fort Payne, Gadsden, Hoover, Vance, and just west of Brent. Rainfall amounts were quite light in the few spots getting rain. No rain appears to have been reported at the Birmingham airport.
The front passed Tupelo around 6 am this morning and the temperature settled back into the upper 50s. Memphis saw the front pass around 4 am and they have dropped back from 64 to 51. I would expect most locations in Central Alabama to drop backwards from their current temperatures in the lower 60s to the 50s with a gradual falling trend through the afternoon. The sun will help it feel less chilling but the northwest wind at 15 mph gusting to 30 mph will help offset whatever good the sun does.
The forecast calls for some pretty chilly temperatures Tuesday morning when the mercury should dip well into the lower 20s. The last time we saw temperatures that cold at the Birmingham airport was February 10, 11, and 12, 2011. Of course, we saw 25 just a month ago on December 1, 2011.
The contrast from mid 60s for highs just yesterday to the low and mid 40s on Monday and Tuesday will put a shiver in your step!
