Arctic Air Visits For A Short Time

WINDY AND COLD: Temperatures are now below freezing over Northwest Alabama this afternoon…. our SKYCAM at Haleyville reports 31 degrees with a wind chill index of 20. Just a few days ago, the GFS had suggested we would be in the low 50s today. Another reminder of how useless MOS (model output statistic) products can be in the medium range when dealing with big temperature anomalies like this.

Along with the cold, we have snow flurries being reported across much of Northwest Alabama, and those are possible as far south as I-20 this evening in the colder air. No accumulation, of course, and no travel issues. The sky will clear after midnight.

This image just came in from Florence via Twitter (@amandamillwood), where snow is falling now…

TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: We will be down in the 20-25 degree range both tomorrow and Saturday morning, with potential for teens in the colder valleys, mainly Saturday. The good news is that the sun returns, and all three days will feature a good supply of sunshine. We stay cold tomorrow with a high between 40 and 45, but we warm into the low 50s Saturday, and mid to upper 50s Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Clouds will begin to return Monday, and a few showers could arrive Monday night. The best chance of rain next week will come on Tuesday with a passing cold front; looks like a setup for about one-half inch of rain around here. Then, the sky clears Wednesday and we turn somewhat colder. The latter half of the week looks dry with seasonal temperatures.

And, once again, no sign of any long lasting cold wave or issues with snow or ice through the rest of January. See the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics and details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
