LUNAR ECLIPSE TONIGHT: Go here for the times of tonight’s eclipse for Alabama. Clouds will be increasing, and might be an issue, but hopefully some folks will get a good look at it.

BIG RAIN EVENT AHEAD: Today will be a nice day with a partly sunny sky and a high in the mid 60s. Tonight, a cold front will move into Alabama from the north, and will bring a chance of showers, mainly after midnight. That front will be stalling out somewhere across Central Alabama, and will bring cooler temperatures tomorrow and overrunning rain for much of the state. We will forecast periods of rain tomorrow with a high in the mid 50s.

Tomorrow night, that surface front will move northward as a warm front, and Friday will be a milder day with a high in the upper 60s. A fairly strong upper trough will bring another round of showers and storms on Friday, and some of those storms could be pretty potent. SPC maintains a severe weather risk for the southern half of Alabama on Friday, but the NAM is showing surface based CAPE values to 500 j/kg around here (the I-20 corridor) with a decent jet structure, so we could see a few strong to severe storms up this way. The biggest issue should be from damaging straight line winds with a relatively unidirectional wind profile.

We can pretty much guarantee rain totals of one to two inches statewide tomorrow and Friday; some amounts of over two inches are likely in a few spots.

THE WEEKEND: We will forecast a clearing sky on Saturday with a high close to 60. Sunday will feature a mix of sun and clouds with a high in the mid to upper 60s. We do note some energy rotating through the Tennessee Valley, but the air will be dry and for now we won’t mention any chance of rain.

NEXT WEEK: Another dynamic system will blow through Alabama late Monday night and Tuesday. There will be run to run variations on the look of this system, but the pattern sure favors the possibility of a phased upper trough with a deepening surface low, and the attendant severe weather threat. We can get specific with this system over the weekend after our Thursday/Friday system has moved out.
