Long Day In The Office

| January 23, 2012 @ 3:07 pm

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today… due to extra duties in our “Focus at 4” Newscast on ABC 33/40 I just won’t have the time. We will get back on the regular two-a-day production schedule tomorrow*

CATCHING OUR BREATH: No, it was nothing like April 27, when 63 tornadoes were responsible for 252 deaths. But, several tornadoes did touch down in Alabama this morning, killing at least two people and injuring over 100. The most serious damage was in Jefferson County, around Oak Grove, Center Point, and Clay, and in Chilton County near Maplesville. Be sure and watch ABC 33/40 News for all of the details this evening… at 4, 5, and 6:00.

The NWS has not completed any storm surveys… as soon as they are finished we will post them.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: No weather issues at all. Drier air is moving into Alabama, meaning tonight will be somewhat cooler with a low near 40 degrees early tomorrow. Tomorrow will be a delightful day with a good supply of sunshine and a high in the low to mid 60s.

WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY: Clouds return Wednesday, and we could see a few scattered showers or storms forming across our state in the moist air. The weather stays very mild for January with a high Wednesday afternoon between 67 and 70.

The next trough will impact Alabama Thursday and Thursday night with showers and storms becoming widespread. Below is the GFS 500 mb forecast valid at 6pm Thursday night at midnight local time…

Note this time there is no phased, negative tilt trough. The southern upper low will produce good dynamic lift for showers and storms, but this is not really a severe look. Instability will be pretty marginal, and below is the forecast EHI (energy helicity index) for Thursday evening…

So… the bottom line is that while a strong storm is certainly possible Thursday afternoon or Thursday night, the severe weather for now looks low. We will fine tune the forecast as the event gets closer.

WEEKEND PEEK: Seasonal temperatures return to Alabama, with dry and cool conditions Saturday and Sunday. Highs in the 50s, lows in the 30s, where they should be for January. The sky should be partly to mostly sunny both days.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We WILL record this week’s episode at 8:30 CST… you can listen live via uStream here.
