Weekend Looking Drier

| March 7, 2012 @ 6:09 am

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

TODAY: Our warming trend continues; with a partly sunny sky most places should reach the low 70s today. Then, mid 70s are likely tomorrow as the sky becomes mostly cloudy. Looks like we might need to consider mentioning a small risk of a shower late tomorrow afternoon, but most places should stay dry despite the cloud cover.

FRIDAY: We will mention a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Friday as a disturbance ejecting from the upper low over the Southwest U.S. passes nearby. It won’t rain all day, but a shower or storm will be possible at just about any time.

THE WEEKEND: All of a sudden our weekend looks much better. Both the GFS and the ECMWF are now suggesting the upper low will be far enough to the west of Alabama to keep our weather drier than originally thought. An upper ridge actually forms over the Deep South, which would mean a mix of sun and clouds both Saturday and Sunday with a high around 70, and only an outside risk of a shower. We will go ahead and back off on the rain chances in our public forecasts later this morning based on this new data, and let’s hope this idea holds for those of you with outdoor plans. See the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics and details.

NEXT WEEK: The southwest ULL will open up and weaken early in the week as it heads for the Great Lakes. A trailing front could kick off a few showers Monday, but the upper support is weak and rain probably won’t be that widespread or heavy. A moist airmass stays in place Tuesday and Wednesday, but there is no dynamic support and probably not much rain at all. Again, see the Weather Xtreme video for details.

And, out in voodoo land, still no sign of any major cold snap, or late season winter weather mischief. And, also on the positive side, no severe weather setup showing up through mid-March.

AT THE BEACH: Believe it or not, next week is spring break week for some Alabama universities and school systems. For the area from Panama City west to Gulf Shores on Saturday and Sunday, about 3 to 6 hours of sunshine each day with just a few scattered showers and thunderstorms. Then, on Monday and Tuesday, about 4-7 hours of sunshine, and widely scattered showers remain possible. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the 70s.
