Quiet, Warm Weather For Alabama

THIS AFTERNOON: Temperatures are mostly in the 70s across the great state of Alabama this afternoon; on radar we have a classic case of scattered showers; most of them at mid-afternoon are east of I-65, and south of I-20. They should fade away later this evening, with only a slight risk of a shower overnight.

WARM DAYS AHEAD: As an upper air ridge builds across the Deep South, that means unseasonably warm weather for our state through the weekend, with daily highs in the 80-84 degree range. And, with the record high sitting at 84 tomorrow and Thursday, we will be very close to record warmth. These values needless to say are well above the average high of 66 for mid-March in Alabama.

And, with a decent amount of low level moisture, like a summer forecast we will continue to mention some risk of widely scattered showers and storms through Friday. But, like today, most places won’t get wet, and there will be some decent intervals of sunshine each day. The best chance of a shower will come during the peak of the afternoon warmth, but an overnight or morning shower can’t be ruled out completely.

OUR WEEKEND: The ridge gets even stronger, and I think we can remove the risk of showers for Saturday and Sunday. Afternoon highs stay in the low to mid 80s with a partly sunny sky, making it feel more like June instead of March.

NEXT WEEK: We begin the week with more warm, dry weather as an upper ridge covers the eastern third of the nation. We should mention a big upper trough will set up out west Sunday into early next week, providing very cold and unsettled weather out that way. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range details. No sign of any late season freezes over the next 15 days.

AT THE BEACH: A few scattered showers are possible along the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores tonight, but tomorrow through the weekend looks excellent, with sunny mild days and fair nights. Along the immediate coast, the high will be near 70 degrees due to the cool ocean water, but inland highs will be in the 76-80 degree range. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is a cool 66 degrees.
