Alabama 811 | Know What's Below.

Weather By The Numbers–3/14/12

| March 14, 2012 @ 11:23 am

I continue to get occasional requests to post more of these, so here we go with the first one in a long, long time. Hope this is not boring.

* 38 below zero was the coldest in Alaska overnight at Nuiqsut.

* 57 below zero was the wind chill at good ole Deadhorse with an actual temperature -33

* 90 inches was how deep the snow was this morning at Valdez. That Alaska location has been buried by snow all winter and this spring. Would you like to see that much snow in Alabama on the ground?

* 56 inches of snow has been recorded at Fairbanks so far this season, actually about two inches below average. There is now 25 inches on the ground.

* 129 inches of snow so far this season at Juneau close to the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean where there is much more moisture available. That is 49 inches above average.

* 2 is how many major winter storms expected in the far NW Pacific Coast of Washington State in rapid sequence. Two feet or more snow expected.

* 11 below zero is expected on the 14,411 foot summit of Mt. Rainier Thursday night with sustained winds of 85 mph. Don’t ask me what the wind chill would be. I would have to wear at least a long-sleeved shirt!

* 80 is the expected high in Chicago (at O’hare) today and highs in the mid 70s all week as exceptional warmth continues for this time of the year. Only 1/3rd inch of snow so far this month and 20 inches all season. Average by this time is 33 inches. Last season at this same time they had received 57 inches.

*67 was the high in Salt lake City, a record by five degrees and 14 degrees above average. Salt lake has received only 23 inches of snow this season (at the Airport) That is less than half the average.

* 91 was the highest temperature in the good ole USA yesterday at Laredo, Tex.  (That is ultra hot for me) Coldest this morning was 15 at Grand Canyon Airport, close to the south rim and also at Mullan Pass, Idaho

* 10.85 inches is how much rain Anniston has received this year so far as we post at least one item from this great state. That is about one inch below average, Last year at this time they has received almost 13 inches. In my humble opinion, Anniston is one of the top five prettiest cities in the state.

* And finally, to rehash an old, old question used in the past: If we could dump enough dirt and gravel to completely fill our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, how much do you think that would change the average annual rain amount for Birmingham which is now about 54 inches.

…Enough of this chatter. I promise to not post this feature too often, and certainly not on busy, busy weather days! Over and out.
