Debut Just Around the Corner

ABC 3340 is about to debut another Skycam – this one in Clanton in Chilton County. StratusStation and ABC 3340 personnel including me were on site today to install the latest Skycam on the tower adjacent to the Chilton County Courthouse. The day was absolutely beautiful with just a little hint of winter in the cool temperatures. A tower climbing crew was assembled, and in about three hours the Skycam was ready. Unfortunately, the Internet connection won’t be available for a day or two, but the view from about 75 feet over downtown Clanton is going to be spectacular.

Besides doing the job of go-fer, I also documented the installation with a few pictures.

Before the camera and weather station can be sent up the tower, the mounting hardware must be readied. Ron Thomas on the right from ABC 3340 and one of the tower climbers from Southern Broadcast Services gets it all ready to go on the tower.

The climber goes up to the point where the mounts will be placed. The long rope will allow a guy on the ground to hoist the equipment to him for attaching to the tower.

The camera mount begins its right up the tower.

With the camera in place, the climbers begin attaching the weather observing equipment.

While the climbers are doing the scary, dangerous work, the rest of the crew is running lines and mounting the equipment that keeps the data flowing, both video and weather.

The completed camera and weather station are completely wired and the view from up there was spectacular. And just as soon as the Internet connection is made, you’ll be seeing these images from Clanton on the only station in Birmingham that brings the weather of Central Alabama right into your living room.
