Snow Blowing Out But Cold Remains

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below and on iTunes. And please pardon the error in the date – it just seems like it is still March 7th to me after a long, long day yesterday!

There is no doubt that the snow is beautiful – we don’t typically get to see it fall during daylight hours in the Southeast. So it is nice to look out the window and see the flakes coming down. It’s also nice to see that the roads are in good shape. However, bridges and overpasses are reeking havoc with a number of accidents reported in and around Central Alabama. The bottom line is to be especially careful as we have been warning folks when traveling in these conditions since the bridges and overpasses can be the first to freeze and create problems.

I find it interesting that the snowfall seems to have been rather uniform with about an inch or less of snow in most locations from Huntsville to Clanton. Southeastern snow events often end with narrow snow bands, but that does not seem to be the case today. Snowfall does vary as you can see from the Skycam images.

On to the upcoming weather. We bid farewell to the snow today as the surface low tracks northeast away from Alabama. That low will bring a real mess to the Mid-Atlantic States and New England with winter storm warnings and snow warnings in effect along with coastal flood watches and potentially high wind. Lots of the area from Georgia to New Jersey are also under wind advisories today. But for us the snow tapers off from west to east and we will see some later today. What we won’t see is any significant rise in temperature. I expect our temperatures to stay in the 30s for nearly all of the area. And that strong northwest wind will make it feel even colder, so bundle up well if you are headed outdoors for any extended period of time.

Our weather rapidly improves Sunday and into the first of next week with temperatures climbing back into the 50s and 60s. We should see lower and mid 60s by Monday when the snow will already become a distant memory. What a year so far!

An upper level disturbance will move across our area but weaken as it does, so I expect to see clouds but there does not appear to be enough moisture for any substantial rain.

Mid-week looks great with great weather for Tuesday, Wednesday, and early Thursday. A new disturbance heads our way on Thursday with the possibility of strong storms Thursday afternoon and overnight into early Friday. But that systems zips by quickly paving the way for a dry weekend and not much change to our temperatures.

A quick peek into voodoo country shows another good rain system around the 22nd as the pattern remains fairly active.

I hope you have a great weekend. Enjoy the snow while it lasts. I’ll be filling in for Ashley Brand this weekend, so be sure to catch the news and weather on ABC 3340 at 6 and 10 today and 5 and 10 tomorrow. Have a great weekend, and God bless.
