Wet Weather Returns Over The Weekend

ONE MORE NICE DAY: Expect another pleasant spring day for Alabama today… lots of sunshine with a high in the low 80s. High clouds should begin to arrive this afternoon ahead of a disturbance over Texas that promises to bring periods of rain over the weekend.

TOMORROW AND SUNDAY: The weather turns wet. Rain and storms will move into the state from the west tomorrow, perhaps as early as tomorrow morning. There are many outdoor events, and I know everybody wants to know a specific “start time” of the rain. Pretty much impossible to do at this point, but the best chance of morning rain will come over the western counties, with rain more likely in East Alabama by afternoon.

Then, we will deal with occasional showers and storms tomorrow night into Sunday. For now it looks like the threat of severe weather is minimal with a weak surface low staying to the south, but this setup looks like a very effective rain producer. While the rain won’t come all day and all night, it could rain at any time over the weekend. For these two days rain amounts of around two inches look likely, with potential for more in spots.

NEXT WEEK: Showers and storms remain likely Monday, but the coverage of the showers should slowly decrease Tuesday and Wednesday as the air becomes drier and dynamic support decreases. The guys at HPC suggest rain amounts here in the 3-4 inch range between tomorrow and Tuesday.

LONG RANGE: Still no sign of any tornado or serious severe weather threat for Alabama for the rest of May. We can all be thankful for a quiet spring tornado season after our one big event in early March. At the end of May the spring tornado season ends, and the Atlantic hurricane season begins. Most believe the hurricane season will be relatively quiet with cooler sea surface temperatures across the Atlantic basin, and an El Nino pattern getting underway. We will see.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
