Dewey Defeats Truman…

Just as that famous headline was wrong back in 1948, my blog post yesterday was similarly premature about the snowless streak.

Yesterday, after chatting with the meteorologists at the National Weather Service Birmingham who reported that a trace of snowfall was observed at the Birmingham International Airport on Saturday, I blogged that the snowless streak in the Magic City was intact. This despite the fact that most areas around the city got measurable snowfall.

Well, when the official climate data came out late yesterday, it showed one tenth of an inch of snow officially at the Airport.

So hurray! The eight year streak of consecutive days without measurable snow finally comes to an end at 2,961 days. Measurable snow did not fall at the Birmingham Airport between January 28, 2000 and March 7, 2008. Although, we did have several trace events officially during that time that yielded some snow in parts of Birmingham, the official readings reflect no snowfall during that long drought.

What really made it significant was that this streak bested the second longest streak (2,225 days) by nearly 750 days! That streak lasted from February 1, 1951 to March 6, 1957.

The other top four streaks are

2/1/1951 to 3/6/1957: 2,225 days
2/13/1905 to 12/18/1909: 1,769 days
2/13/1971 to 12/1/1974: 1,387 days
1/5/1919 to 2/15/1922: 1,137 days
