NOISY, PRE-DAWN STORMS: Big storms moved through Alabama early this morning with vivid lightning, hail, and gusty winds. But, be thankful for the rain because we are about to head into a long dry period with summer-like heat by the week’s end.

Radar early this morning shows a few stray showers over East Alabama; the heaviest rain at 6:00 was over the southeast counties of the state, with strong storms from Ozark to Clio as I write this. We note that SPC has outlooked a “slight risk” of severe weather today and tonight for far East Alabama, through much of Georgia and South Carolina ahead of the upper trough moving over the state.

Any storms that redevelop later today will be over the eastern third of the state, especially along and east of U.S. 431. The western counties will be dry, and most places will see a high in the low 80s with a partly sunny sky.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: The upper trough will be replaced by an upper high, meaning dry and warmer weather. We hit the mid 80s tomorrow, then we will be close to 90 Thursday, followed by low 90s Friday. Expect a sunny sky all three days.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Hot and dry weather is the story for the unofficial kickoff of summer, with highs somewhere between 90 and 94 degrees along with a good supply of sunshine. We might look at a slight chance of a shower by Monday afternoon, but the chance of any one spot getting wet is so small we won’t mention it for now.

BEACH TRIP: I expect many of you are headed to the Gulf Coast in coming days with school letting out. The weather looks simply excellent from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through the holiday weekend, with sunny days and fair nights. Highs will be in the 80s, and sea water temperatures are generally in the 80 to 83 degree range.

SEC BASEBALL: The annual SEC baseball tournament is at Regions Park through the weekend, and the weather simply couldn’t be better. Sunny days, clear nights, no rain. The heat will be up this weekend with highs in the low 90s.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on the new episode we recorded last night.

I will be speaking this morning at the graduation ceremony at Parrish Elementary School in Walker County… my last school appearance for the 2011-12 school year. As always, it has been a wonderful tour across Alabama seeing hundreds and hundreds of students. Look for the next Weather Xtreme video here by 3:30 or so this afternoon. Enjoy the day!
