Rain Slowly Moving Northward

| June 9, 2012 @ 9:52 am

If you are a weather enthusiast, then you probably find yourself glued to the radar when we have rain events like the one unfolding for us for the next few days. I know I check radar a lot when system are moving in or out of the area to plan my own activities.

I thought it might be interesting to note this morning that some of the northern edge of the radar echoes seem to be evaporating. Well, in fact, they probably are. Here is the sounding from the Shelby County Airport taken by the NWS this morning. It’s interesting to note the dry layer between 600 and 400 millibars where the green line (dew point) goes way off to the left away from the red line (temperature). That dry layer will have to become saturated before rain will reach the ground.

I forgot to save the sounding graphic from last night. In that graphic, the dry layer was thicker showing that we’ve already seen that layer becoming modified by the moisture coming our way.
