Heat Backs Off A Bit Tomorrow

TRIPLE DIGITS: Muscle Shoals and Huntsville hit 100 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon… Tuscaloosa was not far behind with 99. At least the humidity values aren’t too bad; the RH at both the Shoals and Huntsville were right at 25 percent when they hit the 100 degree mark. And, unlike yesterday, there is not a drop of rain on radar over the northern half of Alabama at mid-afternoon with a good supply of sunshine.

A LITTLE RELIEF: The good news is that heat levels will back off a bit tomorrow and Wednesday, with highs in the low 90s along with low humidity levels and cooler nights. Some of the cooler spots across North Alabama could reach the upper 50s early Wednesday morning, which will feel pretty good for late June.

But, the heat levels will rise again later in the week, with afternoon highs in the 97-100 degree range by Friday and the weekend. Unfortunately a strong upper ridge will prevent us from getting any meaningful rain; any showers on radar should very, very hard to find this weekend. The hot, dry, and dusty weather will continue.

DEBBY’S TRACK ADJUSTED: As expected, NHC has adjusted the forecast track of Tropical Storm Debby now to show an eastward drift, with potential landfall near Cedar Key, Florida late this week. The system this afternoon is not looking very impressive on satellite images, as drier air is now in the circulation. Pressures are rising, and sustained winds are decreasing. The worst weather associated with Debby today has been flooding rains in Florida between Apalachicola and Tallahassee, where radar suggests over one foot of rain has fallen. See the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics and details.

AT THE BEACH: The weather actually looks pretty decent now for the area from Gulf Shores over to Panama City for the rest of the week as Debby drifts to the east. Seas are still rough and the surf is dangerous, but conditions will gradually improve each day. Expect about 3 to 6 hours of sun each day through mid-week, with increasing amounts of sun over the weekend. Highs will be in the 80s.

LONG RANGE: The GFS hints that heat levels will back off around here toward average values (low 90s) in the July 4-10 time frame. Still no sign of any widespread rain, but at least the chance of “scattered afternoon showers and storms” will be back on the table. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
