Triple Digit Heat Ahead

| June 27, 2012 @ 2:56 pm

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today… I am doing the weather live at 4, 5, and 6:00 from More than Conquerors Church; we are having an air conditioner drive for those in need; watch ABC 33/40 News and see how you can help**

NOT BAD AT ALL: Birmingham reports 91 degrees at 2:00 with a relative humidity of only 29 percent… that temperature is very close to average for late June, and the humidity is much lower than we expect this time of the year. Many North Alabama communities started this day in the cool 50s thanks to the dry, continental air over the Southeast U.S.

SIZZLING DAYS AHEAD: No real change in the forecast… the nasty heat ridge west of the state will slowly move east, pushing afternoon temperatures higher. We will be in the upper 90s tomorrow, and then in the 100-104 degree range Friday through the weekend. These temperatures will be close to record levels, but I doubt if we break the 106 degree record high for June, set on June 29, 1931. Most of the heat records in Alabama in late June are from the early 1930s.

The sinking air motion associated with the ridge will prevent showers from forming, generally speaking, so the dusty conditions will continue.

NEXT WEEK: Ridge weakens a bit, and low level moisture increases slightly, so highs should drop back into the 90s by the middle of the week, and we might see a few “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms” by Tuesday and Wednesday. But, as discussed here, the chance of widespread rain looks very small for the foreseeable future.

DEBBY: Tropical Depression Debby is now centered just off the Florida East Coast in the Atlantic, and it will move northeast in coming days; no additional land threat. Weather is greatly improved over the Florida peninsula today. The rest of the Atlantic basin is pretty quiet; a tropical wave well east of the Windward Islands is not expected to show any organization as it moves to the west.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Looks great from Gulf Shores east to Panama City through early next week. Sunny days, fair nights, highs 87-91, and water temperatures in the low to mid 80s.

COLORADO SPRINGS WILDFIRE: Quite a remarkable image from the chapel at the Air Force Academy from @allismith4 (Twitter)
