HEAT PARADE: The hottest weather in Alabama today is way up north over the Tennessee Valley; they are closest to the core of the “death ridge”… the heat bubble. Muscle Shoals has hit 104 degrees at 3:00… but because the humidity is only 17 percent, the heat index is below the actual temperature (the current heat index there is 101). I also note the humidity at Fort Payne at 3:00 is at 15 percent with a dew point of 45… almost like Phoenix, Arizona kind of heat.

Down this way, Birmingham has hit 100 degrees at 3:00, but the humidity is only 23 percent, making the heat index 99.

THE DAYS AHEAD: No real change in our forecast thinking. Highs will be somewhere between 100 and 104 tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday with sunny days and fair nights. Dewpoints will creep up slightly late in the weekend, but still overall the humidity levels will remain rather low for early July in Alabama. No doubt our hottest weather so far this year.

NEXT WEEK: A high near 100 is likely Monday, but highs ease up a bit, into the mid to upper 90s during the mid-week period. And, with some increase in moisture and a slightly weather upper ridge, I figure we will begin to see a few widely scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. See the Weather Xtreme video for all of the details and graphics.

TROPICS: No sign of any tropical storm formation in the Atlantic basin anytime soon. Gulf Coast weather looks great with sunny days and fair nights through the weekend; highs along the coast will be in the 87-90 degree range. The sea water temperature the afternoon at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a warm 85 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
