Steep Lapse Rates on Morning Sounding

| July 1, 2012 @ 11:01 am

As Bill noted in the post below, SPC extended the slight risk area into Alabama not long after I finished the morning Weather Xtreme Video. In the discussion, I noted the lapse rate on the evening sounding was pretty steep, so I’ve posted the morning sounding here to show that it is still there between 800 millibars and 500 millibars. In fact, the CAPE from this morning is even higher at just over 2700. The problem is that other than daytime heating, there is not a lot of forcing. I did note this morning that there is a weak convergence boundary running from Southeast Georgia into Central Alabama roughly between Birmingham and Montgomery. This corresponds with the updated slight risk area outlined by SPC.

July 1, 2012, morning sounding.

I do not expect to see a lot of thunderstorms, but the ones that do form could pack a punch primarily from about 1 or 2 pm until just after sunset. Damaging downburst wind will be the main threat.

Remember, there is also an excessive heat warning in effect for Central Alabama for today.
