RADAR CHECK: We have two areas of stormy radar on radar at mid-afernoon… one is over Northeast Alabama… the broad area from Huntsville down to near Gadsden shows a number of strong storms. Then, to the southwest, a widespread area of rain and storms is approaching Tuscaloosa from the south. The stronger storms are producing very heavy rain, lots of lightning, and gusty winds, mostly in the 30-45 mph range so far.
Below is a look at the shelf cloud on the leading edge of the storms at Moundville, in northern Hale County…
THE DAYS AHEAD: Not much change in the overall thinking. We expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and Thursday, with potential for beneficial rain for much of Alabama. The latest guidance from HPC shows around 6 inches of rain over the next five days at the northwest tip of the state, with 2-3 inch totals for the I-20/59 corridor. We usually don’t get rain like this in mid-summer unless there is a tropical storm or hurricane involved.
Temperatures will be well below average, with highs in the 80s tomorrow and Thursday… then close to 90 on Friday.
WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Showers and storms will be a little more scattered across the state Saturday and Sunday; expect a mix of sun and clouds both days with a high in the low 90s. Similar weather can be expected early next week.
GULF COAST WEATHER: We are forecasting about 5 to 7 hours of sun each day on the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores, but you will have to deal with a few passing showers or storms from time to time. Highs will be in the 86 to 89 degree range on the immediate coast. Scroll down for a waterspout picture taken this morning at Fairhope, on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay.
