Clouds ARE Thinning

One of the problems with the early morning forecast is that the upper air sounding is made beginning around 5 am and complete by about 7 am. This is a distinct disadvantage on days like this since it hard to know exactly how thick the cloud deck is. The sounding from the Shelby County airport this morning indicated that the low level clouds are 3 to 4 thousand feet thick, so they will take a little more time to erode and dissolve.

A quick peek at the latest satellite animation indicates the process is under way as thin spots develop and clouds evaporate in others. But there are a few spots where the clouds appear to be even a little thicker meaning a little longer time for clearing.

Temperatures were generally around 60 degrees just before noon across much of the I-20 corridor with temperatures a bit warmer into South Alabama where the clouds were not nearly as dense. I still think most of us should see mid-70s for highs today with some good sunshine for much of the afternoon. But there are likely to be a few isolated spots where the clouds hold tough.
